Supporting Children and Youth with Mental Health Issues

  • PDF

Mental health issues often begin during childhood and the professionals in our education system are, at times, in the best position to identify the need for mental health services at an early age.

In June 2011, the Ontario government released its comprehensive 10-year Mental Health and Addictions Strategy, which focuses on children and youth in the first three years. Support for children will target three key areas: fast access to high-quality services, early identification and support, and helping vulnerable kids with unique needs.  The Strategy includes investments that will allow for the placement of mental health workers and nurses with mental health expertise in schools and will provide educators, social workers and other professional tools and training to identify mental health issues early on.
